Layover & Connection Tips

The following are some practical tips on laying-over or connecting at LAX that would be applicable in the real world:

  • Provide domestic-domestic and international arrivals 2.5-3, and 3.5-4 hours respectively, because of size and terminal layouts.
  • On flylax.com, use the official LAX terminal map to ensure you depart on the correct terminal before exiting the arrival gate since airlines can change terminal.
  • To ease the security, be at least 30 minutes before your boarding gate closes and use TSA PreCheck, where feasible
  • Transit passengers must verify visa or ESTA status on the U.S. State Department Web site; when transiting LAX may involve repositioning by U.S. customs/immigration.
  • Considering you have a 4 - 5 hour layover and you want to remain in the airside, lounges and quiet areas may prove beneficial--but when you have 6 or more hours you may want to explore Los Angeles with caution.
  • LAX has free Wi-Fi (SSID: "LAX Free WiFi" ) and terminal arrival points have local SIM cards and e-SIM pickup kiosks that travellers can use to get data
  • In case your baggage is labeled interline and you are still airside, you need not baggage re-check, always ask your airline and check using AirportAssist.
  • Check in on your flight through airline App and through LAX flight boards, in case of a gate change use AirportAssist to get directions on how to access fast routes.
  • Family-friendly areas (e.g. in Terminal 3 and TBIT) such as the family restrooms, nursing rooms, and stroller-friendly pathways should be identified by the travellers with children or older family.
  • The Tom Bradley International Terminal of LAX has art installations and an open walkway with views of the tarmac, ideal to spend a few minutes of repose and view jets flying.
  • Take quiet zones into account: in case you want to see fewer people, go to Terminal 6 and Terminal 7 lounges that do not usually have as many customers.
  • It can also be useful when travelling between terminals without being airside, as the free "Inter-Terminal Shuttle" on the departure level (lower level) can also assist in the movement between their terminals, but it is time-consuming by half an hour
  • In case you have more than 8 hours at the airport, and you want to explore Los Angeles, AirportAssist will arrange a short city tour, say Venice beach or Santa monica, and assure you that you will be back in time to pass through the security line once more.
